Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease with a wide spectrum of manifestations. Meanwhile, manifestations in the oral mucous varies between 9 - 45% in patients with SLE in such as gingival inflammation, mucosal lesions, and increased risk of teeth caries. Lack of knowledge about how to maintain oral health, resulting in poor oral hygiene that can exacerbate which can worsen existing problems in the oral cavity of patients with SLE. This community service aims to improve oral hygiene of patients with SLE at Tittari Foundation Surakarta. The service method includes pre-post intervention and intervention. The pre-post intervention method uses oral hygiene examination utilizing the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified Indicator (OHI-S). While the intervention method includes lectures, demonstrations and toothbrush practice coaching. The population was SLE patients who are members of in the community at the Tittari Foundation, Surakarta, totaling 300 people, and a purposive sampling of 100 people was taken. A purposive sampling of 100 people was taken. Based on the results of the community service program, the oral hygiene status of patients is in poor condition. The Debris Index (DI) status of patients with good categories is 24%, moderate 32%, and bad 44%, while for Calculus Index (CI) status are good 31%, moderate 51%, and bad 18%, then for OHI-S Index are good 23%, moderate 42%, and bad 35%. After the intervention conducted through education and counseling, the patient's oral hygiene status has improved significantly. Based on the results of the community service program that has been carried out, the oral hygiene status of SLE patients is still very poor. Interventions such as Oral Health Education can significantly improve the oral hygiene status of SLE patients at the Tittari Foundation in Surakarta. Therefore, it is necessary to follow up the monitoring of oral hygiene maintenance. In the future, Tittari Foundation Surakarta should provide health education to SLE patients continuously related to oral hygiene, such as the importance of brushing teeth and good and correct tooth brushing practices.
